Workshops - Matting and Framing

Matting and Framing

Learn the basics of matting and framing for gallery exhibition.  We will discuss framing options and acceptable matting and glazing.  We will introduce you to wholesale suppliers for SDWS members.   Multiple mounting techniques, including floating, will be demonstrated.

The emphasis of the class will be on mat cutting.  You will learn how to cut mats on the SDWS Logan 850 as well as other mat cutters that you might consider for home use.  We will show you the secret to perfectly aligned double (or triple) mats and how to create multiple openings for diptychs and triptychs.

We will have a variety of mat cutters available and with limited enrollment there will be lots of hands on practice.

Susan Hewitt

Susan Hewitt is an award winning watercolor artist, juror, and teacher of not only adults, and but children as well. She was lucky enough to receive the Teacher of the Year from the California Council Social Studies for American History in the Elementary grade level.  Her diversity in many artistic and educational endeavors gave Susan an edge in her presentations and audience appeal. When Susan replaced the general education in elementary school to watercolor art, the perfect transition was smooth and complete.

Receiving her BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in children’s book illustration and printing making, Susan stayed the course to keep in the art field.  She became a professional picture framer associated with Impressions Gallery, an internationally known printing shop in Boston that specialized in intaglios and etchings. After moving to San Diego, she worked as an assistant director and in sales at the Old Town Circle Gallery for 10 years.

Engaging in her other passion, teaching, Susan taught 5th grade in the Lakeside Union School district before retiring in 2011. Art was always calling, so it was natural for Susan to join the San Diego Watercolor Society. She has been their Member Shows Director for 3 years. Not forsaking education, Susan also volunteered for their Education Outreach program as an art teacher for San Diego Unified, Miramar Marine Base for military families, San Diego County Schools and as their Outreach Director.

Receiving many awards from the San Diego Watercolor Society monthly shows, Susan was fortunate enough to be a prizewinner in art festivals and gallery shows around the San Diego area.  She has exhibited in the San Diego International Show, Pikes Peak International Show, New Mexico International Show, and, most recently, has been accepted by the 2016 Western Federation of Watercolor Societies.

Her watercolor style captures a slightly illustrative, crisp image with a moment of uniqueness about a person, place or thing that’s frozen in time. It’s a stirring that is shared from the artist, Susan Hewitt, to the viewer, such as you!
