Workshops - Freedom in Watermedia

Freedom in Watermedia

 Kurth Painting     Kurth Painting Image

The Freedom in Watermedia Workshop is designed to teach all levels of students to paint intuitively, starting without preconceived notions or outcome. There is no preliminary planning or drawing. The process will dictate direction as students use a variety of techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value. Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application, working transparent to opaque building layers using a variety of mark making tools, watercolor, gesso and acrylic. There will be regular comments and evaluation of work in progress concerning relationships between shape, texture, line, color and value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but the goal is work which is visually pleasing and aligned with the artist's personal aesthetic.

Stan Kurth

I was born in Phoenix, Arizona and have lived in the area all my life, except four years in Flagstaff at Northern Arizona University getting a degree in History and English Literature. My aunt, an artist and art instructor, was a huge influence when I had not yet started school. I have drawn and painted most of my life. My paintings are represented in private, public and corporate collections, and I have shown in numerous local, national and international exhibitions including the National Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, International Society of Acrylic Painters and the San Diego Watercolor Society International. I am a signature member of the National Watercolor Society, San Diego Watercolor Society, Western Federation of Watercolor Societies, Contemporary Watercolorists of Arizona and Arizona Watercolor Association. I teach workshops and share my process with artist communities throughout the country.

"There's a complex simplicity in Stan Kurth's paintings that is both paradoxical and straightforward. As he works with multiple layers of watercolor and gesso, his provocative images emerge. Ambiguity and form coalesce into a singular, cohesive vision that holds the viewer spellbound" - Betsy Dillard Stroud - Watercolor Masters and Legends: Secrets, Stories and Techniques from 34 Visionary Artists
