Join SDWS

Whether you are an artist or an art appreciator (or both), you are invited to participate in a variety of art activities and opportunities:

It takes many volunteers to handle Jury Day every month.

Unique Benefits of SDWS Membership

Exhibition at the Gallery
Every month, members have the exclusive opportunity to submit their work (for a modest fee), in a new juried show at the SDWS gallery. Jurying is done by a different, highly respected artist each month.  Awards are given for each show, and four times a year monetary prizes are awarded by the juror.  This opportunity allows members to present their work to the public on a regular basis.  A modest 20% commission to SDWS will be taken on any sale.

First Friday receptions, which are open to the public, are held the first Friday of every month, often attended by many art-interested collectors and viewers.

Artist Demonstrations & Monthly Meetings
Demonstrations by well-known artists (usually workshop instructors) are featured at SDWS monthly member meetings.  These meetings give members a way to keep in touch with painting methodologies, current activities, and one another.

The Eunice Porte Library

Members may browse an extensive collection of art books, videos, DVDs, and slides and borrow from the library at no charge.

The Western Federation Show
Members of SDWS are eligible to submit entries to the Western Federation of Watercolor Societies Exhibition, made up of eleven major art organizations in the Western states, including SDWS, and held yearly at different Western Federation member organizations.

Each month our members enjoy a demonstration
and
social gathering.
Paint Out Crystal Pier
Monthly plein air demonstrations -
another good reason to join SDWS.
Newsletter
SDWS publishes an eNewsletter approximately 2 times a month to keep our members aware of developing opportunities and information.

Workshops
More than a dozen workshops and classes are offered annually by internationally known painting instructors who feature the latest trends and classic techniques in water media.  Workshops are held in the SDWS classroom adjacent to the SDWS gallery.  Members receive discounted rates for the workshops (see Workshops for current details).

Paintouts
Enjoy the special pleasure of painting outdoors in favorite San Diego locations during the more than 60 opportunities offered each year. Saturday morning events with demonstrations and critiques are held monthly, and less formal paintouts are weekly on Wednesday mornings.

Volunteer Opportunities
Because we are an all-volunteer organization, SDWS needs participation from its members.  There are many areas to use your particular expertise, exercise your special interests, and benefit SDWS. (See Current Needs)

Supporting SDWS

We rely on support from grants, endowments, private donations, and members to help sustain and expand our mission.  Members who donate in addition to membership dues receive additional benefits and levels of recognition based on their contributions for one fiscal year.  Benefits are determined based on the level of donor contributions at the time the benefit is delivered (for example, catalogs).  Donor recognition will occur at the end of the SDWS fiscal year.
