Abstracting Plants with Experimental Watercolor Techniques...welcoming random and surprising elements to the painting process…

Day One: Using photographic images, we will explore techniques to disengage from brush work. With pours of pure colour for optical mixing, we will add and lift resist, to create rich layered paintings.

Day Two: We will begin with quick drawings of fresh plant material. Working on watercolour paper, turning once again to resist and pours, we will introduce some mixed media (inks, pastels, gouache) to build loose, expressive plant portraits.

Artist Bio

Alison Watt

Alison Watt is a visual artist and writer. Her work includes botanical watercolors as well as still life, landscape, and abstract in mixed media, plaster, acrylic, and oil.

Originally a biologist, the natural world informs both her painting and writing. Her books include an illustrated memoir The Last Island, a Naturalist’s Sojourn on Triangle Island, a book of poetry, Circadia, and a novel, Dazzle Patterns.

She is also a popular art teacher, offering classes in her garden studio on Protection Island as well as other venues like botanical gardens, summer art workshops. She also teaches each year in France, offering city and plein air watercolour workshops.
