Travel Photos to Artistic Landscapes – Feb. 25 and 26, 2023

Like most of us, you have saved photos of wonderful scenery and famous places that you possibly considered to one day turn into watercolor paintings. Now is your chance to give it a try, but where to start?

Maybe begin by answering the questions: “WHY did I take the picture in the first place? What VISUALLY caught my attention? What do I want to EMPHASIZE from my photos?” Some possible answers are… the colors, the shapes, the contrast, the textures, the feeling or mood and, of course, the subject.

In this workshop, Jami will show you ways to create watercolor landscapes using your favorite travel photos as REFERENCE. Emphasis will be on how to define your photos’ center of interest (focal point) and create a painting with visual impact that shows the best aspects of your subject.

On Saturday morning, Jami will quickly review elements of designcomposition, perspective, and landscape values through discussion, short demonstrations and practice. She will explain her steps for evaluating photos to develop a good compositional plan.

Students will then spend the rest of the time evaluating their photos and developing a sound plan for their painting(s).

Jami will continue to give input and suggestions as students work throughout the weekend and finish Sunday afternoon with a friendly constructive critique.

Be prepared for lots of handouts, practice, short demonstrations and fun… yes, fun! Come ready to try new ideas or better understand how to apply what you already know. Relax and give yourself a break. Perfection – not allowed!
