Layers, layers layers...you can never have enough layers in your mixed media art...building the history in a painting is what makes it intriguing and draws the viewer in.

This workshop is all about adding layers to your art with papers, marks, scratches, paint and more. Choosing a color palette, subject matter, design and composition...getting it figured out before you approach your canvas and then learning what gets to stay and
what needs to be eliminated to make a better painting.

Denise will be demonstrating layering techniques and sharing the best supplies to use for your mixed media art in this workshop. You will be working on several pieces of mixed media art throughout the workshop.

Day One:
Go over supplies, class plan , finding your inspiration and making papers for your piece.
Demo & practice / warm up pieces to get you in the groove. Have 3 small 8x10 surfaces to work on, water color or mixed media paper is suggested.

Day Two:
Prepare the substrate(s) for your piece with papers, textures, paint...adding in your inspired design. Optional to work on several pieces at once.
Collage: adding your handmade papers and paint to your piece
Stencils + stamps + dimensional objects: making & using stencil and stamps

Day Three:
Adding final touches, final marks and top finish coats. Faux encaustic demo.

Artist Bio

Denise Cerro’s background includes parallel careers in both visual presentation and as a faux finish and mural artist. Mural work eventually led her to painting on canvas, and her merchandising eye for putting things together stirred an interest in mixed media and assemblage art. Originally a self-taught artist, once Denise began painting on canvas over twenty years ago, she set out to learn as much as she could about painting techniques by taking countless classes and workshops in both representational and abstract painting.

Denise’s use of layered papers and textures serve as a ground upon which her semi-abstract paintings are built. She paints what she knows and loves...still life, flowers, landscapes, figures, faces, textures...pushing them into abstraction. Her inspiration is life around her and a curiosity of how to convey that onto canvas.

Along with creating in her Encinitas home studio, Denise is a member of the art collective F1VEart and paints in the F1VEart Studio & Gallery several days a week in the Arts District Liberty Station in San Diego.
