This two-day workshop introduces artists to the expressive potential of gouache for landscape painting. Gouache offers a unique balance between the transparency of watercolor and the flexibility of opaque painting, allowing artists to both design strong compositions and revise work during the painting process.

Students will learn how to develop a landscape painting from the earliest stages of observation and field sketching through to a refined studio painting. The workshop emphasizes strong value structure, color harmony, and atmospheric perspective to create convincing landscapes.

Key topics include:

  • Simplifying complex landscapes into clear value shapes
  • Designing strong compositions using thumbnail sketches
  • Mixing harmonious color palettes for natural landscapes
  • Using atmospheric perspective to create depth
  • Understanding brushwork and edge control
  • Techniques for correcting and strengthening paintings during the process
