Last year, as a result of contacts made through outreach for the SDWS International Exhibition, a request for cooperation with the European Confederation of Watercolour Societies (ECWS) was received. That organization holds annual watercolor exhibitions and symposia in the 14 European countries and regions that participate in the Confederation.  Last year four paintings by SDWS artists were selected by juror Ken Goldman and exhibited at the ECWS Exhibition in Avignon, France in November 2016. A large catalog of the exhibition in Avignon is kept at the SDWS reception desk for you to inspect.

The next exhibition will be held in Salamanca, Spain Sept. 27 - Oct. 27, 2017.  The Spanish watercolor society, AEDA, has invited us to send four examples of our members’ transparent watercolor art to that exhibition, with no submittal fee required.  They have asked that we identify the four paintings for submittal, and send them, unmatted and unframed, to AEDA by May 10, 2017.  AEDA will be responsible for matting and framing those watercolors for the exhibition. The only costs for these submittals would be the cost of shipping, of insurance, juror fees and any import duty fees. To defray these costs, we propose to charge participating artists $20.00 for each online image submitted to the SDWS juror. In case the $20 per image does not generate adequate revenues to cover the juror and shipping costs, up to an additional $100 per artwork shipped will be assessed.

Entries will be done online, through the SDWS website, and those submitting must be current SDWS members. The maximum number of images that may be submitted by each artist to this show is four, all of the 50 cm. x 70 cm. (19.7” x 27.55”) size. Paper size is to be 2 cm. (0.8”) larger than the image sizes listed, i.e. 20.5” x 28.05”, requiring paper a little smaller than a full sheet. The paper and image sizes will be strictly enforced.  You may submit art previously submitted to SDWS Member Shows, or to Western Fed, but limit your works to transparent watercolors completed in the last three years.  If you use an existing, full-sheet painting, you may need to cut the paper down to match the ECWS-required paper size.  Note again that only four paintings ultimately will be selected by the SDWS juror for transmittal to Spain. Since this process is a bit different than our usual member shows, we propose to limit entries to the first 30 artists to submit their images online.  There is no theme for the show, just good art.

We anticipate that the website arrangements for these submittals and payments will be completed in early March, and that online entries of your images will be accepted from March 16 – April 24. The juror, Ken Goldman, will then evaluate the online images, and select 4 (plus 2 alternates) to be sent or brought to SDWS for his final evaluation in person, on April 29-30.  On the back of each painting, as required by AEDA, shall be the name of the submitting society (in this case SDWS), the country of origin, the name of the artist, his or her postal address, email address, telephone number, title of the art-work, and price (in Euros). Note that the current exchange rate is 1 Euro = $1.07. The best four paintings will be identified by the juror, and sent to Spain by SDWS on May 3.
