My journey as an artist spans a lifetime, from earliest memories sitting under my mother’s baby-grand, to a teenager discovering the French horn. A degree in music and my professional life as a musician in New York City and California, formed my attitude and single-mindedness of purpose.

But this career path was interrupted by a move to Japan. There, I studied shodo, (Japanese calligraphy.) I became bonded to a relationship with the brush. State-side, I pursued figurative drawing and painting, developing a proficiency in watercolor and the figure.

Music is still my reference point and insight to creating visual art. Whether working in watercolor, oil, or acrylic, my focus is to feel the innate and expressive qualities I found in playing horn. That essential understanding of myriad colors of tone the horn can produce, I reach for in paint. Finding the rhythm and movement to convey a journey, a story, or poem that exists in the measures of music, I can also embed in my art. My thought is to begin with that same visceral quality in mind, which can be melodic or raucous!

Each painting then offers an opportunity to discover a new insight into how we act, react, do, think, worry, enjoy or ponder. In this way, the work tends to unfold in an abstracted reality, through metaphorical sound and a visual narrative. Lately, though experimenting with more inventive forms of composition, color and materials, I find the content doesn’t change.
