Color Mixing Bootcamp

Artwork by Ken Goldman.  Artwork by Ken Goldman.

Day one will begin with a presentation of the ArtStudio App’s color swatch HSV program (Hue, Saturation, Value) on the large TV monitor. This will visually demonstrate how hue, value, and saturation dynamically interweave to create very specific colors. Knowing how to identify three of the four components of a particular color is the first step toward mixing that color accurately. This digital method of analyzing colors, combined with participants mixing them on paper, will make the traditional color-wheel setup of our palettes much more understandable and user-friendly.

On day two, we will continue mixing colors as an exercise but will also introduce temperature (the fourth element of color) into the discussion. Using all the basics learned on day one, we’ll create several very simplified compositions in four different keys: low, medium, high, and full range. Learning how to control hue, saturation, value, and temperature in various keys is how artists learn to add interpreted "color moods" into their thumbnail compositions, rather than simply copying colors from photo or drawing references.

One of the main reasons color mixing in water media is such a challenge is because watercolors dry lighter and acrylics dry darker; only oils hold true when they dry. But isn’t it exciting to learn how to mix accurate colors with such challenging yet wonderful mediums?

Experience Level: All levels are welcome, but a little experience would be helpful.
