Day One will be held in the workshop classroom.
Introductions, followed by discussion of materials and equipment followed by students assessing their own materials and readiness for painting outdoors on the third day. Vignette demonstrations of block-in and painting of flowers, leaves, etc. followed by students painting. Individual attention to students, with advice and encouragement.
Day Two will be held in the workshop classroom.
Continue vignette demonstrations followed by students painting, in preparation for painting outdoors on the third day. Discussions on Composition.
Day Three will be outdoors in a garden setting (weather permitting).
Students will set up to paint and I will give individual advice and encouragement. In the afternoon, I'll close the workshop with a demo. There will not be a group critique.
Recommended Experience Level: Basic familiarity with drawing and composition. Oil painters, and artists who have studied atelier drawing, will find many of my approaches to drawing and painting familiar
Brief Biography:
Carolyn Lord was introduced to the California Style of plein air watercolor as a college student in the 1970’s. She later took workshops with Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt, George Post, Robert E. Wood, and Milford Zornes. Recent studies in academic drawing and oil painting have brought aspects of Tonalism and Impressionism into her current work.
Her paintings are exhibited in California, Colorado, and Utah galleries, and she is a Signature Member of National Watercolor Society, California Watercolor Association, California Art Club, and Laguna Plein Air Painters Association.
Lord has participated in plein air events in California: Laguna, San Luis Obispo, Carmel, Alameda, Sonoma, Mendocino, and in Crested Butte, Colorado. March 2026, she will participate in Borrego Springs Plein Air.
She has served as a juror or judge for Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors, California Watercolor Association, Montana Watercolor Society, Mendocino Open Paint Out, Rhode Island Watercolor Society, and others.
In Southern California, Lord’s paintings are represented in Fallbrook by California Watercolor. In 2025, she exhibited in LPAPA’s and SDWS’s plein air shows, Fallbrook Art Center’s Signature Watercolor Exhibition, Watercolor West at the Hilbert Museum in Orange, and judged TAG’s watercolor show in Los Angeles.
