In this workshop we will explore the interface between gestural mark making and controlled use of structure and definition using acrylic paints.

In my wild bird paintings, I aim to communicate a sense of discovery and revelation where the bird is partially hidden in the background - the figure and ground are an integral part of each other. This approach gives us plenty of scope to satisfy different moods in our creative practice; time to play vs time to slow down, adding just enough definition to make a coherent visual statement and a unique artistic expression.

My work is primarily inspired by Nature and the Pacific Northwest coastal region of BC, Canada. Through the exploration of ancient temperate rainforests near my home, I feel a real sense that all vegetation is intertwined and essential to the survival of plants, animals and humans. My focus has shifted from being an observer to expressing a more ’felt’ interpretation of the environment. Through walking and sketching outdoors, I examine the movement of wind, tides, erosion, changing river patterns and bird migration.

My work falls into 3 themes - Wild Birds, Habitat and Hidden Worlds.

Wild Birds is an ongoing theme which began in 2019, after following the local monthly bird count organized by the Squamish Environment Society. I was astonished and delighted to learn that over 200 bird varieties visit Squamish and Howe Sound each year. My painting approach mirrors this sense of surprise and discovery. The backgrounds begin from a very emotive departure point - I apply paint directly and intuitively, remembering sounds, climate, season, colour and texture. From there the shapes of birds begin to reveal or suggest themselves. I try to include a little of their story, their behaviour and their relationship with the environment as well as making them distinct and recognizable. The challenge is to find the right balance between gesture and recognizable form, identifying and revealing hidden elements, the barely visible and often ignored.

I’m interested in observing how landscape and wildlife are impacted by climate change, development, land management and industry. Through my volunteer work with the Squamish Environment Society and as a member of Artists for Conservation, I learn and witness the power of advocacy.
