AIA Italy Show Information

The Italian Watercolor Association (AIA) is organizing an International Watercolor Exhibition to be held near Lake Maggiore in northern Italy in the summer of 2018 (June, July, August). The exhibition will be held at the Civico Museo Parisi Valle in Maccagno, Italy, which is devoted to modern art. Please visit this link for more info about this museum: http://www.museoparisivalle.it/inglese/museo_en/il_museo_en.htm

The town of Maccagno is located on Lake Maggiore 100 km from Milan and close to the Swiss border. Maccagno, the lake and the surrounding hills make it a very pleasant and scenic place. The nearest airport to Maccagno is Malpensa (Milano). Information on Maccagno is available at http://en.lagomaggiore.net.

The AIA is planning to show about 150 paintings of small size (35x50 cm, one-half sheet) to be framed in Italy by the AIA. That metric size is equivalent to 13.78” x 19.69”. The format can be either vertical or horizontal.  A catalog of all the works will be printed, and each accepted artist will receive one.  The exhibition will be supplemented by collateral activities such as outdoor painting and workshops. The AIA says that they would bear the costs of 4 nights lodging and part of the flight ticket (up to 700 Euros) for an artist from SDWS who would conduct workshops in Maccagno in June/July 2018. If you are interested in conducting such workshops, please us know (president@sdws.org), and provide a description of your workshop experience, and list appropriate references.  Your workshop credentials will be evaluated by a committee of experienced SDWS artists.

SDWS is invited to send 15 pure transparent watercolor paintings. AIA is inviting other associations to participate, including Belgium, Poland and the USA. The paintings need to arrive in Milan by the end of November 2017.  Exhibition fees (paid to SDWS and then to AIA) would be 100 Euros per painting and will cover the costs of framing, delivering the painting back to San Diego, exhibition set up and a free copy of the catalog. This exhibition offers the opportunity to show and sell your work in Europe, and for an SDWS artist to conduct workshops in Italy. An SDWS juror will select the 15 works to be submitted to AIA.

Artists may submit up to three images for the juror’s consideration.  The fee for the first image is $20.00, for the second is $15.00, and the third is $10.00.  The fee will be paid online at the sdws.org website, either through use of PayPal, or by a credit card. The fee will be used to pay juror Ken Goldman for his time, and for shipping costs/ taxes.

The SDWS website will accept digital images for juror’s consideration starting Friday September 15 and ending Wednesday, November 1.  Jury will take place on or about Wed. Nov. 8.  Following the jury process, the artists for the selected 15 paintings and alternates will be notified, and those who do not live in San Diego County may need to plan on shipping the identified paintings to SDWS for final decisions by Wed. Nov. 15.  A copy of the information form in the AIA prospectus must be completed and attached to the back of the painting, and each shipped painting will need to be placed in a clear plastic envelope.  The final decisions about what art to ship will be made by Friday, Nov. 17, shipping will occur on Tuesday, Nov. 21, and delivery to Milan, Italy, would occur on or before November 28. The shipping box will be insured for a declared value of $1000 (the maximum limit by FedEx), which is expected to result in a European Value Added Tax (VAT) on the shipment of $130.00.

As described above, following the jury process, on or about November 10 the artists for the selected 15 paintings and alternates will be notified, and those who do not live in San Diego County will need to decide on how they will get their paintings to SDWS for final decisions by Wed. Nov. 15.  A copy of the information form in the AIA prospectus must be completed and attached to the back of each painting, and each shipped painting will need to be placed in a clear plastic envelope for protection.  The final decisions about what art to ship will be made by the juror by Friday, Nov. 17, shipping will occur on Tuesday, Nov. 21, and delivery to Milan, Italy, would occur on or before November 28. SDWS will prepare the box for shipping all 15 paintings to Milan, with each painting (in its envelope) surrounded by two foamcore pieces of the same size as the artwork (plus a bit more). The shipping box will be insured for a declared value of $1000 (the maximum limit by FedEx), which is expected to result in a European Value Added Tax (VAT) on the shipment of $130.00.

The artists of the 15 watercolors shipped are responsible for payment of the 100 Euro ($117 at this time) exhibition fee for each painting to AIA. To facilitate the transaction, SDWS will accept artist payments in dollars on this website, and will then transmit the TOTAL funds for all the paintings to the AIA-identified bank in Milan.
