Chuck McPherson Wins Second in May Show

Chuck McPherson, an artist and resident of Tierrasanta, San Diego, California, won the second-place award in the continuingly competitive May 2021 Member’s exhibition “Shape Zone” show at The San Diego Watercolor Society Gallery at 2825 Dewey Road in Liberty Station, San Diego, California.  McPherson’s painting entitled “Oceanside Peers” was selected by prominent local artist and juror Risë Parberry for this honor, out of more than 270 entries. Parberry said of  the painting, “This is a very unusual painting, with strong diagonals, and a lot of violet that somehow keeps from racing off the page because the neutrals keep it in place. It’s an everyday scene from an uncommon viewpoint.”

McPherson is a well-known award-winning artist working in watercolor, mixed medium, acrylic, and oil paints. He has been painting as far back as he remembers, so it was natural to have earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic communications with a minor in journalism at San Diego State University. He later attended the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA. After his studies, McPherson started a successful advertising agency in Los Angeles, working 30 years on the business side of art. In 2008, after having been using acrylics and oils; for many years, Chuck discovered his passion for watercolor, and has been working in that medium ever since. He now paints full time. Having won more wards for his art than can reasonably be counted, Chuck is a sought-after instructor and artist mentor, bringing energy, innovation, and great creativity to his classes and workshops; he is also a sought-after art show juror.
