Juror Commendations

“Into the Forest” by Kim Muslusky

Wonderful color! The burst of the sun creates great light and shadow through the trees. It has echoes of pointillism.

“Loopholes” by Melodie Tune

Super texture, nice rough areas with smooth nuanced areas. The blocks bumping into each other create  tension along the middle. The whole thing works really well. The drips are great. It’s a powerful painting.

“Pimento” by Lorraine Page

Very early Hollywood! The red polka dots, the little red pimentos of the olives that pick up the polka dots, the red nail polish. Lots of great patterns and colors. Nice!

Honorable Mentions

“Fallbrook Car Show” by Robin Erickson

This a gorgeously done, technically proficient painting. The multiple reflections are amazing. You can see the intensity of the person looking at the car, the beautiful details of the car, the color of all that lovely blue that is accented a little by mustard, which warms it up. It is layered beautifully.

“Sir Leon” by Wanda Honeycutt

What appeals to me most about this is the pattern in the mane, and the simplicity of the lion. He has the calm majestic look of a lion, but a fun playful mane and nice chunky feet holding him up.

“And On We Go” by Sarah Sullivan

What is interesting about this painting are the figures, and their various physical stances….simple shapes expressing different attitudes. Then there is the great yellow jagged shape of light going through the figures. Everything is connected with the bands of dark and light. It’s really charming.

Honorable Mention Miniatures

“After The Storm 1” by Tony Scriba

The sparkle of the water is what is immediately attractive about this tiny painting. Its delicate pale gray washes, and the sky almost melting into the land give it depth.

Best of Miniatures

“Satisfied” by Jean Silva

This small  work focuses on the delicately rendered figure against a strong graphic black polka-dotted background.. The contrast of the two makes for a great little painting.

Best of Theme

“Stargazer” by Roberta Dyer

The theme is “Between the Lines” and you can’t get any more between the lines than this. The red lipsticky line is just fun, as it picks up the red lipstick on her mouth. This painting made me laugh.

“Stargazer” by Roberta Dyer

Third Place

“Chrysanthemum for Mondrian” by Rhonda Anderson

The color gradations from orange to the soft yellow gold are enhanced by the delicate texture throughout the whole painting. The chrysanthemum has strong, curved, beautiful shapes. The overall texture really makes this a highly interesting painting.

Second Place

“A Quiet Afternoon” by Edward Abrams

This painting has strong dramatic contrast. The three major shapes are very different and pull us into the brightly lit courtyard.  The focus so far to the right is unusual.

First Place

“From Midnight’s Secret Garden” by Maureen Kerr

This is a very powerful painting with a lot of movement, wonderful variation in shapes and strong brushwork. The tiny sparks of red add interest to the monochromatic painting.
