Juror Commendations

“Fish Tale” by Wanda Honeycutt

This is a wonderful, whimsical painting. I especially like the woman riding the gorgeous fish. The treatment of the mountains with the many colors and the fractures is wonderful, as are the palm trees that are many colors, complementing the fish and the mountains. The tiny little details in the lower water, the little yellow weeds, are terrific.

“Three Vases” by Joan Merrick

This is a very interesting painting for vases and flowers, using collage in several places, and also painted. The colors are muted yet strong. The design has many intricate shapes: within the flowers, within the pots, and on the floor. It is a wonderful peaceful floral painting.

“The Red Chair” by Ann Slater

This artist certainly knows how to design a painting. It is complex, the colors work together, its figure is well done, especially the face. I love the red hair flying off into the background. I also love the little pictures in the upper right that look a little like birds. The polka-dotted floor with the polka-dotted orange shoes are just great.

Honorable Mentions

“Retirement” by Charlotte Kingston

This is wonderful, I could not walk past it without smiling. It has a wonderful perspective, with the gentleman who is retired in the foreground  holding all the space, yet you have all the empty space above him. The painting is balanced, and it works, and he is just great.

“Ha Long Bay” by Rebecca McCullough

This is a very interesting design, and very striking for a small painting. I like the muted colors, not too much detail, but excellent drawing. I especially like the water and the three different colors as it fades into the background. The wonderful cave that is multifaceted above the fisherman is a great design feature.

“Untitled” by Karen Chin

The bold use of colors in this painting, and the design is incredible. I love the feel of the orange and the blues and all the tiny little details. The emphasis of the circle in the center just makes the painting. It looks like the future.

Honorable Mention Miniatures

‘Cool Spring” by Svitlana Ivasyuk

This is a beautiful watercolor, very simple, very small, with extreme detail even though it is a mini. It has a wonderful feeling of peace just before a big storm.

Best of Miniatures

“You Can’t Eat Money” by Kathleen Scoggin

I really liked the design, especially the use of collage with the pieces of money, and the contrasts with the dark and the light. It’s very strong. There are a lot of vertical elements, and they are all different. It is a very creative painting.

Best of Theme

“Tidepool Reflections” by Nicole Barlow

This is a great, strange painting. It is obviously looking for change. The design of the painting in circular format is interesting, with her reflection just showing through to the sky. I love the detail in every part of the painting. It is enchanting.

Third Place

“Going Home” by Ann Hutchinson

This is a beautiful traditional watercolor with excellent execution, and it is done exactly the way you are supposed to use watercolors. It has beautiful colors, with calm and relaxing scenery. It is wonderful, and beautifully done.

“Going Home” by Ann Hutchinson

Second Place

“Blossoms and Birds” by Rose Pope

This is a beautiful design, especially with the multiple colors in both the foreground and the background.  I like the design of the flowers and how they complement each other, with the little bird sitting in the flowers. The sky gives the same feel as the foreground. It is wonderfully designed.

First Place

“Frankoma Remembered” by Nell Bartlett

This is beautifully designed with colors that are muted, with wonderful yellow linework that sets off the painting. It is balanced, and calm, and beautiful.
