Juror Commendations

“Pots on a Picnic 4” by Joanne Newman

The artist’s way of breaking up the painting by making me think it was another piece of canvas on canvas was very successful. I enjoyed all the little parts of this painting done by her sure hand.

“Barber of Chevelle” by Lorri Lynch

This painting is just wonderful. It shows a barbershop that I want to go into. I want to find out what’s going on. It is so well done, and the characters look great. Also, the comments on the signs are wonderful.

“The Sunday Times” by Tony Scriba

This one is beautiful because of the shapes used to create a person on a sofa. They are so abstracted that you might not have noticed the figure, but yet when you see it, you can’t see anything else. It’s just wonderfully done. The color choices are great.

Honorable Mentions

“Not This Time” by Michele Joyce

This one just has such a great character analysis. What, you wonder, is going on in this guy’s head? And you can tell by the amount of creation and details around the eyes that there’s a lot going on that we don’t understand. I found it compelling, and I liked it a lot.

“She Waves” by Wanda Honeycutt

I love the colors! The color combinations are fantastic, with just a little orange to set off all that beautiful blue. I was interested in those fish, that appeared to be taking care of that lady.

“A Different Point of View” by Ann Slater

I enjoyed this one, especially because the center character is caring about the one character on the side. The painting made me feel very emotionally engaged, and I thought it was brilliantly done.

Honorable Mention, Miniatures

“San Evaristo III by Susan Wormsley

This painting is fascinating from the very beginning because of the way of handling the sky. It is so unusual and yet so brilliantly done that it pulled me right into the whole picture and the experience was very enjoyable for me.

Best of Miniatures

“California Hills” by Thomas O’Brien

The color choices are incredible. With the play of the lights and darks, I really got the feel for how the hills moved in the space, and I thought it was just beautiful. The little extra things – the figure of the cow, and the use of bringing the blue down in among the greens is beautiful. It is an incredible painting.

“California Hills” by Thomas O’Brien

Best of Theme

“Psychocat” by Dottie Thompson

What else needs to be said? This cat has everything going on, and you can imagine that he’s not happy. So, I just thought it was perfect for the best of theme.

Third Place

“Black Angus on the Moooove” by Sarah Sullivan

I enjoyed this painting because it looks like she started with a black under painting, and then she brought the cows and the horses to  life. It’s very minimalistic but still captured my attention right away.

Second Place

“Pacific Coast Highway Big Sur” by Thomas O’Brien

The color combinations used to separate the mountains from the foreground are fantastic. As we get lower into the scene the portrayal of the lush beauty of the location contributes to what is a very lovely painting.

First Place

“Away” by Jean Silva

This painting was fascinating to me because of the shapes that surround the main character in the image. The woman looks like she has a problem, and it makes me want to help her solve that problem. The color combinations are beautiful, and this one really stands out.
