The San Diego Watercolor Society offers numerous plein air paintout opportunities. The most recent paintout was at Old Poway Park on March 9, 2019 and featured demo artist, Keiko Tanabe.
Keiko travels the world presenting watercolor workshops. We are lucky to have her here in San Diego. Keiko was born in Kyoto, Japan. Her initial education was international communication and then she went on to get a masters degree in international education at UCLA. Keiko worked in international relation positions for a Japanese government trade organization in Tokyo, a law firm in San Francisco, and a private consulting firm in San Diego.
In 2003 the artist in Keiko took over and she started her journey of becoming a renowned artist. She started with basic drawing and watercolor classes at a local community college. Keiko started her professional career in 2005 and began exhibiting her watercolors. That same year Keiko took a workshop from Alvaro Castagnet and learned the enjoyment of plein air painting! From this point on her paintings have been juried into exhibitions across the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Keiko has achieved the pinnacle of being an award-winning watercolor artist, juror, and watercolor educator! Her watercolors are in private and corporate collections around the world. “I really enjoyed the day at Old Poway Park last Saturday. So many great paintings were created that day and bravo to everyone who braved a little drizzle and the chilly morning air. But it soon gave way to sun and we were happy campers painting in the lovely park.A quaint view of the woodsy neighborhood with a bridge over a stream was the subject for my demo, as I thought it best represented that particular locale. I even put in a few artists painting by the bridge to tell a story of the day. I thought a nearby outdoor market might be fun to paint as well (maybe a yummy smell wafting through the park was enticing me), so I did another painting of the crowded market scene with the iconic Poway station building next to it.I want to thank Lorri Lynch, leader of Saturday Paintout, for inviting me. It was an honor for me to do a demo and critique for everyone who gathered last Saturday.”
